The world premier of the movie Katutura is screened at Ster Kinekor in the Grove Mall of Namibia, featuring a special appearance by the main cast.

This powerful film tells the story of Katutura, which deals with the struggle of everyday life in the township. There is crime, drug abuse, violence, but it also shows the strength of the community as well as the bustling creativity in the place otherwise known as the place where we do not belong.

Katutura follows a group characters experiencing the gravity of living in a township. Ex-convict Dangi has to deal with living a law-abiding life, an extramarital son and an old flame who his wife doesn`t know about. Gangster Shivago explores a new market to sell his drugs and Kondja, a teenager in a wheelchair who helps street kids, falls in love for the first time. Their paths intertwine and their lives collide in both hopeful and brutal ways.

In “Born into Struggle”, the South African filmmaker Rehad Desai takes us on an intimate journey mapped out by the scars etched into his family’s life from having a father who was intensely involved in politics.

Barney Desai was a political hero during South Africa’s struggle for freedom, yet as a father he was damagingly absent emotionally. Rehad spent most of his young life in exile and became politically active himself.

On this intensely personal journey into his past, Rehad realises he is following in his fathers’ footsteps as he reviews his relationship with his own estranged teenage son.

The screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Born into Struggle’s Director of Photography Simon Wilkie.

The screening is co-hosted by AfricAvenir.
