Back to Basics

The juxtaposition of Namibia’s landscapes continues to leave me speechless. The northwest, characterised by rocky flat-top and pointy mountains cascading into valleys and then rivers. The deep south, where standing on a hilltop has you overlooking endless stretches of deserted plains. Our coastline, misty and magical, where gemsbok occasionally stroll on the beach. The fingertip of the Caprivi, lined by wondrous waterways, lush greenery and punctuated by rural villages.

Do blissfully nothing at Ietsiemeer

Beach holidays on our coastline look a little different. The Skeleton Coast did not earn its name for being a sunny swimmers’ haven. It is called that way for being majestically moody and predominantly overcast, with the cold Benguela Current ruling the restless waters. Sure, the sun comes out and the wind takes a break every so often, but loving our coast includes indulging in its almost constant cooler weather. Going for beach walks here means wearing a sweater and sensing how the baby hairs around your face curl from the crisp moisture. It is a different kind of Namibia from the dry interior, a welcome respite and utterly magical in its own right.

Unique Stays Across Namibia

Some call this the land of milk and honey, others name it the land of endless horizons. Namibia is also fondly known as the land of the brave, or the smile on the face of Africa. Many titles have been attributed to this country by locals and visitors alike, and as a local myself, I’ll biasedly say they’re all true. But if only one word were available to do justice to this beautiful place, it would have to be “unique”.

Tracking Namibia’s Endangered Black Rhinos: A Rugged Journey into Damaraland’s Wilderness

It’s a cloudy and crisp morning, still dark. The proverbial rooster has yet to crow. On an open game viewer we go slow and steady down Grootberg mountain. Just as the first light of dawn appears, a soft rain breaks. That is not ideal for rhino tracking but we remain optimistic, and soon enough the rising sun dries up the fine droplets, marking the start of a rugged journey into the habitat of Namibia’s endangered black rhino.

Capturing Damaraland’s Essence with Ultimate Safaris

Damaraland is a place of contrasts - the harshness of the Namib Desert softened by the resilience of life. Desert-adapted elephants roam the dry riverbeds, their wrinkled hides reflecting the sun’s intensity. Gemsbok and springbok move gracefully, their survival strategies honed by generations and seemingly unaffected by the desert climate.

The future of eco-entrepreneurship is female

Those who often venture across Namibia’s varied landscapes will agree that roadside stalls selling curios are predominantly run by women. From a distance you can see the colourful dresses of Herero women as they wave at passers-by. Himba women in their striking traditional attire employ the same income-generating strategy of selling crafts, and so do the Damara and Nama ladies with their bright smiles. Namibian women are the backbone of our artisanal crafts industry, and yet when it comes to locally run accommodation ventures, only seldom do you see a woman in the lead role.

Desert Reverie

This is a magical land – the colours, the softness of the dunes and the almost ethereal backdrop that appears to be painted on the horizon for dramatic effect. It is exquisite, and it seems unreal. There is so much to marvel at that one’s worries seem to melt away in the sunlight. What once seemed insurmountable now seems petty, and you find yourself zoning out at the sight of space and beauty all around.

Forging a natural masterpiece

There is a symphony that was written between water and rock millions of years ago. Carved into the depths of this land, canyons provide a look into the geological epic that unfolded, a view of the history of Earth and a mesmerising tapestry that showcases the enduring journey this landscape embarked on through the ages. Easily one of Africa’s most impressive geological formations is the Fish River Canyon. It is my first time visiting the canyon, and I am doing so in style, staying at the striking Fish River Lodge that boasts rooms on the western brim of the canyon, far away from the crowds that flock to Namibia’s second-largest tourist attraction.

We recently had the privilege of staying at the Lüderitz Nest Hotel, a charming 4-star haven perched along the stunning coastline of Lüderitz, Namibia. Having recently undergone a major renovation, the hotel beautifully combines modern comforts with a touch of timeless elegance, making it the perfect base from which to explore the beauty of Lüderitz. Within its walls, we discovered not one, but two exceptional dining experiences: the Penguin Restaurant and the Crayfish Bar & Lounge, both of which left a lasting impression.

Cornerstone Guesthouse

Swakopmund, Namibia’s coastal jewel, is known for its beautiful blend of history, adventure and natural beauty. It is also home to the much-loved Cornerstone Guesthouse – a small, private bed and breakfast which offers a peaceful retreat with a central location. In March of last year, seasoned tour guides Hobby and Steffi Kreiner took over this iconic property, bringing their own personal touch and years of experience in the tourism industry to the guesthouse.

The desert symphony

As I gaze upon the land from a distance, the vastness of the Namib stretches out endlessly before me. Up close, the landscape is an amalgamation of gravelly sand, tufts of dried grass and the stark silhouettes of blackened mountains. Somehow, these simple elements of nature harmonise in perfect balance. It is in the seamless orchestration of all these elements that the beauty is found. Much like a symphony where each note finds its place in a greater whole. In the desert, every individual detail is crucial to the song it sings collectively.

A castle of love and legends

That is what the story of Heinitzburg Castle is all about – the enduring love of one man for one woman in the 19th century, and the love of one woman for a 110-year-old castle in the 21st century. It is also a story of family, dedication and history. This is the essence of Hotel Heinitzburg.

Between a rock and a timeless place

As someone who has travelled extensively across Namibia, I often feel like I have seen it all. But this country never ceases to amaze me. Every journey reveals something new, something magical that leaves me in awe. My recent trip to Waterberg Plateau Park was no exception – it felt like stepping into another world.
