Photo feature – Tarry Butcher

A happy snappy borrowed from my parents got me interested in photography from a young age, but it was obviously limited in what I expected from a camera. I bought my first proper camera when I was working on the Orange River as a river guide. Being out on the water every day I saw the most amazing birds, wildlife and scenery and I needed a camera that could capture these magical moments perfectly.

I often wonder what the easiest route is to take through Windhoek’s CBD that would give one the best views of the city. There are certain buildings that I love, certain places that I want to show everyone who visits, so that’s why it had me thinking: what’s the best way to go when you’re on foot?

Tour through Kavango and Zambezi

Cattle graze peacefully in the green pastures, and traditional reed and mud huts stand out between fields of mahangu and sorghum, some right next to the main roads – to allow better access to resources and transport. Activities can be observed from your vehicle, or better still, from one of the designated picnic spots under the abundant trees. The area is wild and untamed, giving a glimpse of the ‘real’ Africa. The biggest attraction of the Kavango and Zambezi regions is still the rugged, rural life that can be observed even when only passing through.

Winter weather – The yellow season sets in

It takes just about six weeks after the final rains in April for the grass in the veld to fade through grey to yellow, creating great waving swathes of golden meadows stretching as far as the eye can see – stark, beautiful and matched with clear, brilliant-blue skies overhead.

Rhino sculpture conservation project launches

On July, 28 the bright red ribbon around 9 tons of white Karibib marble was cut, and since then, French artist Gé Pellini has been chipping away to transform the mass of rock into a life-sized rhino sculpture. Hunters Against Poaching Trust (HUAB) will auction off the artwork in aid of conservation efforts.
