After spending about two weeks in Angola, the desert lion, nicknamed the Terrace male (XPL-68), re-crossed the Kunene river back into Namibia – his home territory. His second river swim took place after two attempts before, and the third attempt managed to get him across. Third time lucky.

The journey

The initial river crossing on August 1 was a landmark occasion, and he repeated this feat in the early morning hours of August 16.

Meticulous observations for the past two weeks by renowned desert lion researcher Dr Flip Stander, displayed XPL-68’s movements on the Angolan side of the Kunene river – where he made a quite impressive round trip before his return to the river.

At least two kills were made in Angola during his sojourn there.
