September 4, 2014Following a thorough assessment by the Eco Awards Namibia team, Pack Safaris passed the assessment process with flying colours. This marks the tour operator as the first business of its kind to be assessed by Eco Awards and passing with a distinction.
A local pioneer in sustainable tour operations, Pack Safari is the first Namibian Tour Operator to submit a Self Assessment and Application for a sustainability assessment by Eco Awards Namibia.
Until May 2014, Eco Awards had only conducted assessments on Tourism Accommodation Establishments in Namibia. Since assessments commenced in 2006, 53 Accommodation Establishments had already been certified.
Of those, only 8 establishments ever managed to score higher than 80% (4 Flowers) during a first assessment.
Pack Safari achieved an impressive 81%, measured against a demanding new set of Criteria, based on the Global Criteria for Certifying Sustainable Tourism (GSTC).
The main criteria subsections are:
- Sustainable Management;
- Social & Economic Benefits;
- Cultural Heritage Benefits;
- Environmental Benefits.
A grant from the Environmental Investment Fund and financial support from NedbankNamibia, had made the Pilot Assessment possible.
MORE ABOUT ECO AWARDS NAMIBIA
Eco Awards Namibia is a mark of distinction for accommodation establishments that are planned and managed according to eco-friendly principles. The programme promotes the selective and careful use of our resources, promoting reducing, recycling and reusing. In the process an establishment can improve its profitability, often with very little additional expenditure.
The programme is based on similar schemes in several other countries, and the criteria that those schemes use were amended to suit the Namibian environment.
Awarding of an Eco Awards desert flower certificate is a sign that the establishment keeps to a standard of environmental care and implements sustainable practices for the future of the immediate environment, the company and the people.
