Erindi on the market for N$1.3 billion

Gert and his nephew and business partner Paul Joubert yesterday announced that Erindi, the largest privately owned game reserve in southern Africa, is on the market for N$1.3 billion (US$ 130 million).

The property has been under Jourbert ownership for the past 30 years and at 70 000 hectares, home to tens of thousands head of game and other animals and 310 bird species, the brothers feel that the price is fair.

In addition to the announcement of the sale, Gert Joubert told the media that any Namibian who is able to find a buyer will receive a commission of N$65 million.

Yesterday Gert said that the sale is a “very emotional thing for me” but added that it is time to let go. He said the offered selling price converts to N$20 000 per hectare.

Joubert said that while any one able to buy the property is welcome, he feels that the “natural buyers” of Erindi would be government “because they actually need it to complete their portfolio of game reserves”.

But Joubert, the majority share holder, added that the “rational choice” for a buyer would be China. He noted that Erindi now has to be developed to the next level and possibly cater to upmarket international tourists.
