The latest addition to one of Namibia’s most remarkable private game reserves, Erindi Private Game Reserve, is Camp Elephant.

The self-catering chalets and camping facility opened its gates at Erindi at the end of November 2012.

Camp Elephant is built in a horse-shoe shape, at the centre of which is a waterhole. The floodlit waterhole allows you to watch the wildlife go about their business undisturbed, while you put a few chops on the fire and lounge around in the afternoon glow. Here a variety of wildlife can be spotted, from the magestic and rare sights like leopards, to regular visitors such as elephants, warthogs, Kudu, oryx and many more.

The shape of the camp ensures that those staying in chalets or at the campsites are a mere 50 metres away from the busy water hole at all times.

Under the stars

Camp Elephant hosts 15 self-catering chalets that are fully equipped with everything from bedding and towels, to a fully equipped kitchen, including a fridge, microwave, cutlery and crockery.

The chalets include two bedrooms with two single beds each. A pull-out sofa in the lounge is ideal for the children. Although it is doubtful you’ll feel like switching it on, a television with 24 DStv channels has been placed in the lounge.

Magic

Outside, is where the real magic happens.

Because Erindi’s management knows that a  braai in the bushveld, at the edge of a watering hole, should be on everyone’s bucketlist, the veranda or ‘stoep‘ is equipped with a family style wooden table and bench and two built-in braai areas One is on the stoep, while the second one is a circular braai area at the front of the chalet, ideal for melting mushrooms and sharing campfire stories under the skies.

Each chalet can take a maximum of six and provides two shaded parking areas.

The camp sites are well kitted out, with verdant grass lawns, shaded parking and private bathrooms.

You can bring your own tent or hire one at the farm stall.

Farmstyle

A brilliantly stocked farm style shop makes it possible for last minute excursions to Camp Elephant, without worrying to buy wood, drinks or food. The farm stall shop is packed with anything you would need for your camping trip or self-catering stay.

The shop sells firewood, ice, meat, rosters for a braai, torches, drinks, cleaning products, towels, fresh vegetables and fruit, bread and even a few pre-made salads such as potatoe salad.

Self-drives

Visitors to Camp Elephant can choose from three self-drive routes especially opened and created for the self-catering visitor to Erindi’s Private Game Reserve.

The routes include the Canyon route, Zebra route and the Eland route. Drivers are given a map to navigate the well maintained roads. If you are curious about the latest wildlife sightings, a board is present at the shop on which guides notate the sightings.

This sparkling new establishment lives up to its claim: “Erindi Private Game Reserve offers the widest selection of exciting species, the most dynamic and informed guides, the finest cuisine, the best facilities, and the friendliest welcome you could imagine.”
