Cost: Free

UN/DECLARED UN/DESIRABLE – an exhibition by Jo Rogge can be seen until August 5th.

Jo Rogge’s work has always been imbued with power and meaning, and which in the words of one reviewer “never fails to touch and move you”.

Reflecting on her family background and identifying with neither, the artist seeks metaphors for, and is motivated by, the omnipresent fear and anxiety, stigma and discrimination around issues of nationality, sex, race, ethnicity, class, migration and sexuality in her temporary ‘homeland’ and the continent. Rogge salvages found and natural materials and upcycles objects into interesting sculptural forms.

Here we see an artist in transition, personally, stylistically and conceptually.

Exhibition: Changing History – World War One & Namibia

When: July 8, 2015 @ 8am

Where: Museums Association of Namibia, Windhoek

Cost: Free

Contact: +264 61 302 236

The Museums Association of Namibia presents “Changing History: World War One and Namibia”

The Museums Association is located at 112 Robert Mugabe Avenue in Windhoek.

On July 9, 1915 the German Schutztruppe surrendered near Khorab. The surrender was the first significant victory of the Allied forces in a global conflict whose scale has led historians to refer to it as the First “World War”. Whilst millions died in the muddy trenches of Belgium and France, few Namibians reflect on the impact that this global conflict between imperial powers had upon our nation. However, the invasion of German South West Africa, as the German colony was known at the time, was carried out by the South African Army led by their Prime Minister, Louis Botha.

World War One changed Namibian history forever. German colonial rule ended, but was replaced by a South African occupation that would last for 75 years. This year marks 100 years since the end of World War One in Namibia. To commemorate the occasion the Museums Association of Namibia has signed an agreement with the British High Commission to develop a mobile exhibition describing the campaign that took place in Namibia and highlighting the ways in which the war significantly changed Namibian history.

The exhibition was developed in partnership with a team of students from UNAM History Society.
