Niko Fischer is living from day to day. He has dropped out of law school and now he drifts through Berlin. Oh Boy describes the turbulent 24 hours in the life of a young man in episodes, at the end of which nothing will be as before. With his excellent first feature film, Jan Ole Gerster successfully reminds us of the great role models, yet without exploiting them: the early works of Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours, but also the films set in Munich’s Schwabing district from the late sixties. Yet, despite all the recognisable role models, Gerster develops his own tone, which is evident throughout the entire film.

Celebrating 25 years of Namibia’s Independence, AfricAvenir & FNCC present the Audience Choice award winner of the 2014 Namibia Theatre and Film Awards:

Waterberg to Waterberg – in the Footsteps of Samuel Maharero is directed by Andrew Botelle.

What happened to Samuel Maherero after the battle of the Waterberg in 1904? One minute he was the most influential leader in Namibia, the next he was running for his life with a bounty on his head. Relentlessly pursued by the invading German army, his people were scattered and hunted down. Samuel and a small band of loyal followers somehow managed to escape into the waterless sands of the Kalahari Desert.

Following in this remarkable man’s footsteps, Waterberg to Waterberg tells the history of the Herero migrations across Southern Africa more than 100 years ago. A journey of a thousand miles, on horseback and by foot, from the Waterberg Mountain in Namibia to the Waterberg Mountain in South Africa. A journey to find a place they could call home.

Through interviews with Herero elders living in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa today, we piece together this true story. Through colonial reports, archive films and original photos we bring to life the old world of Samuel Maharero and his nation in exile between 1904 and 1923. They may have lost most of their possessions in the war, but the Herero carried their culture inside of them, and refused to let it die. This is their story – and the story of the hero who led them.

Evolution of fish with emphasis on sharks, presented by Prof. Dr. David G. Senn

Fishes represent the oldest vertebrates; first forms lived about 400 million years ago. These primary aquatic vertebrates are not one uniform group but an extremely rich diversity of animals. Vertebrate classes are the Agnatha (Jawless Fishes), Placodermi, Chondrichthyes (Cartilagenous fishes) including sharks and rays and the Osteichtyes (Bony Fishes, the majority of groups and species). Sharks are often considered primitive, due to their skeleton of cartilage. But it can be domonstrated that sharks show highly developed brains, and complex patterns of locomotion and reproduction.
