European golfers should consider coming to Namibia after September, following the European golfing season. Packages include a Namibian golfing safari coupled with a golfing escape in Cape Town, culminating in a golf/sightseeing trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
Because of the direct flights to Walvis Bay from Cape Town, many South Africans enjoy playing the salt-surface golf course at Walvis Bay. Air Namibia accommodates passengers who bring along their golf clubs, allowing a maximum of 15 kg of golfing equipment to be checked through with no charge. There are also golf courses in Swakopmund, Gobabis, Okahandja, Oshakati, Lüderitz, Tsumeb, Otjiwarongo, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Oranjemund and Henties Bay.
Golfing organisations
The Namibian Professional Golfing Association (NPGA), was formed to develop professional golf in Namibia. The Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU) plans various annual events, catering for amateur and professional golfers (men and ladies), local as well as from abroad.
Windhoek Golf and Country Club
The 18-hole, fully grassed, par-71 course is 6 500 metres long for men and 5 400 metres for women, and boasts a practice putting green and a practice range with floodlights. Bunkers, greens and tees, caddies and motorised caddie carts are available.
Rossmund golf course
With a stunning backdrop of red sand dunes, 450 palm trees translocated from a dormant date farm in the Hoanib River, and more than 250 springbok roaming freely across it, the unfenced golf course at Rossmund Golf Club & Lodge is uniquely Namibian.
The 18-hole, par-72 course with fully grassed fairways is located 7 km inland from Swakopmund, outside the fog belt. The course length is 6 130 metres for men and 5 150 metres for women. It is believed that Rossmund is the first golf course in the world to have the same grass on the tee, fairway and green, although the preparation for each is different.
