Heiko, Captain/Owner of ZEEPAARD Catamaran in LÜDERITZ, undertakes daily Catamaran Tours to Halifax Island to show the visitor/tourist Namibia’s largest colony of African Penguins and often en route, Heaviside Dolphins and Cape Fur Seals swim across the bows. On 4 January 2015, at least 6 FIN WHALES were spotted off Shearwater Bay – just beyond Dias Point (1487) – naturally, all visitors onboard the catamaran were ecstatic! Normally, whale sightings off Lüderitz are from June to October.
FIN WHALE (quick facts): The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), also called the finback whale, razorback, or common rorqual, is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales. It is the second largest animal after the blue whale, growing to 27.3 metres long and weighing nearly 74 tonnes! Other whale species are also found off Lüderitz and these are the Humpback and Southern Right Whales.
