As part of its mandate to facilitate the production of innovative works of art and crafts, the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN), with funding from RMB through the FNB Foundation, initiated the RMB Art Come Together Workshops last year.
The workshops are set to take place in each region of Namibia until 2020, with a different medium chosen for each and facilitated by a local artist who is an expert in that specific art form. The NAGN organised the workshops in conjunction with local communities, who helped to identify 20 suitable candidates for each workshop out of a flood of applicants. Participants were provided with suitable tools and materials in an encouraging setting where they had the opportunity to explore new art-making techniques under the guidance of their tutors.
The first workshop, held in the Khomas Region in 2018, was facilitated by well-known printmaking artist Ndasuunye Papa Shikongeni who led young participants from the Katutura Youth Enterprise Centre, the SOS Children’s Village, the International University of Management, the College of the Arts and the University of Namibia.
The second workshop took place in the Kavango East Region where participants are surrounded by clay every day. They were shown how to create not only traditional and functional pots but also pieces of art in the form of sculptures. University of Namibia Ceramics graduate Alfred Muifi led the workshop.
In the Oshana Region, a bi-art discipline workshop took place in which both drawing and painting, facilitated by Marianne Indongo and Zakeus Martin respectively, were introduced to a mix of old and young.
The final workshop of the year was held at the Little Bugs Namib Sky Community Trust centre in the Sossusvlei area in the Hardap Region. Victoria Siphiwe Mamvura-Gava introduced employees of the Trust into the art of jewellery creation.
Artworks collected from workshop participants are on display and for sale at the NAGN until 28 February. Funds from sales go directly to the artists.
