August 16, 2013Toktok Talkie – Kaokoland (Damaraland Namibia)
August 18, 2013Namibia’s close to year round hot climate is ideal for swimming. No wonder the annual events attract hundreds of participants and spectators.
Jetty Mile
Held annually in December, the Jetty Mile is sponsored by the Pupkewitz Foundation and organised by OTB Sport.
The event starts at Tiger Reef Beach Bar, from where participants swim past the Jetty to The Mole. The distance of the full event is approximately one mile. The sprint event starts at The Mole and swimmers cover a distance of 600 metres. Participants are advised to wear wetsuits.
The event was launched in 2007, with only 50 particpants. By 2012 more than 200 swimmers entered the event.
Thousands in prizes are up for grabs.
Pointbreak Open Water Challenge
The annual Pointbreak Open Water swim takes place at Oanob Dam in March each year.
Competitors can choose between a 2.1-km – the longest open-water swim in Namibia – or a 700-m sprint. Open-water swimming is one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet, and is a sport that anyone can do, from young to old.
