With more than 1 million tourists visiting Namibia annually, appropriate training in all tourism sections is critical.

In line with this, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) last week launched the Tourism training platform, an online staging area for tourist related learning and job opportunities.

The tourism training platform was a collaboration between the MET and that German funded GIZ.

“The tourism training Namibia web-platform is designed to answer the training needs of the tourism industry in Namibia. It lets training providers advertise themselves and their courses”, Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, stated at the launch.

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Namibia, Onno Hückmann, also present at the launch, added that “well trained staff is a basic requirement for all enterprises in the sector. And here we are not only talking about managers, administrators, but also about tour guides, waiters, barkeepers, front desk staff and customer care services. Alert, well trained people are the foundation of success of tourism establishments and hence a growing industry”.

The platform is designed to link all players from the tourism and education sector through e-learning applications.

“In a vast country with a sparse population density, the platform will also help to qualify people easier and at lower cost, even at the remoter places where Namibia is particular attractive”, Hückmann said.

In essence, tourism workers can visit the website and inform themselves about career options, training offers and a variety of other relevant news. Training providers will be able to introduce themselves and attract training participants and manage their courses.

In addition Tourism Training Namibia offers a fully functional online training system that allows training providers to run online training courses and allows participants to learn any time, anywhere!
