Wordweaver sets up shop
September 18, 2013Omaruru Artist Trail beckons – 20 to 22 September
September 19, 2013In partnership with the British High Commission and the Namibian Heritage Council, the British Council launched a two day workshop in Windhoek (11 & 12 Sept), to address major challenges of those who need to use English in their work, but for whom it is not their first language. The workshop was given to Namibian tour guides, to develop and sustain their skills, following earlier training courses.
A group of twelve specially chosen tour guides worked, under the guidance of trainer, Richard Finch from South Africa to set up regular, ongoing English Clubs on the three Heritage sites (Brandberg, Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest), from where they operate.
A varied monthly programme of language learning activities, embracing reading, debates, drama, research, storytelling and many others will be offered to all those involved in interaction with the tourists who visit their sites. The guides also plan to involve the local communities in their activities, such as schools and churches. They will also plan inter -site activities. October/November will see the start of this imaginative and enterprising venture in Brandberg, Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest.
One course member said of this Workshop “I came to improve my language skills, but gained so much more- it was an awesome experience”, while another is quoted as saying- “I am excited to be able to sow the seeds of my learning, for the benefit of others.”
This exciting and worthwhile initiative can only serve to enhance the quality of Namibia’s important Hospitality and Tourism Industry.
The picture attached shows participants of the training course together with the staff of the British Council and the trainer Richard Finch.
