June 14, 2013Move over Shakira. Twyfelfontein Country Lodge won the Joint Venture Song Competition in style at the Tourism Expo 2013. Lead singer Dorethea //Uises had the audience rocking with the group’s cover version of Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka – This time for Africa’. The prize of N$15,000 was handed over by the Mpumzi Pupuma, Managing Director of the contest’s sponsor, Standard Bank. His comment said it all: “Eisch!”
Earlier in the day the three competing groups from Twyfelfontein, Damaraland Camp and Lianshulu Lodge had recorded songs in the studio for a CD which will be distributed to the delegates attending the Adventure Tourism Travel Association’s World Summit in Namibia in October. This year’s winners, Twyfelfontein, will sing live to the delegates at the opening ceremony.
It was stiff competition. Lianshulu came on first in traditional attire and got the audience going with a Caprivian dance number. Damaraland Camp brought a touch of story-telling with good humour, singing the witch doctor song that has audiences in hoots after supper at the camp.
All of the groups are made up of camp staff who love to entertain guests in the evening, and each of them took a prize home, including N$10,000 for the runners up and N$5,000 for third place, thanks to Standard Bank’s generous sponsorship.
At the end of it all the bank’s MD, Mpumzi Pupuma, climbed onto the stage to dance with the groups in a joyful celebration of Namibian culture.
